A Day in the Life of a Principal Consultant: Jia Min Wu

Have you ever wondered what it was like working as a Principal Consultant? Jia Min Wu lets us in on a typical day in her world.

So you have a passion for dance and are a certified Ballet teacher. How did you enter the field of recruitment?

I still teach Ballet at the School of Dance in Singapore on a part time basis. However, I had my first taste of recruitment when I did an internship at Robert Walters back in 2012 and really enjoyed it. I’m now in my fifth year at Webber Chase and as they say, the rest is history.

What does a typical day look like for you at work?

My typical day consists of many coffee sessions with various candidates and working on active mandates. I work part time at Webber Chase and I’m fortunate enough to be able to work some of those days from home.

What attributed to your success being promoted from Senior Consultant to Principal Consultant?

I would say being laser focused on time management has led me to be more productive. I strategized and prioritized my focus on relationships that matter. It’s easy to get distracted these days so being able to be self motivate has helped. Lastly, I certainly won’t deny that the commissions at Webber Chase are great!

What is the best part about your job?

I’m pleased that I can create my own happiness at work as the company allows me to be flexible with my time. It’s very rare in the recruitment industry to be given the flexibility that I have, so I’m grateful.

What has been the most challenging part of your job?

Unfortunately, we have come across some clients who don’t know what they want. It’s incredibly hard to search for that specific “unicorn” when the brief isn’t clear. The key is to keep asking the right questions in order to guide the client in the right (and clear!) direction.

What is the market like at the moment?

The commodities market is in a period of change. As with many other industries, there’s been cost cutting measures on many fronts and that has led us to be even more aware of our strengths and focus on them.

What do you love about working at Webber Chase?

I wouldn’t have as much fun if it weren’t for my team. Nick (my boss) is incredibly understanding and flexible. The annual incentive trips for those who hit above target have always been a great highlight. I managed to win a spot to go to London in 2016 which was fantastic.

Are there any training or professional development courses offered by Webber Chase?

We have received training on particular aspects of our job such as client management and personality reading. We work with so many different personalities on a daily basis so it was insightful to learn more about this.

Do you like the sound of Jia Min’s day?
